Every employee has a diverse background when it comes to their ethnicity, religion, beliefs, or culture. And so, the mentor must match this diversity to ensure a good match. If their ideologies do not align on the same page, employees may not feel comfortable with the mentor match. However, this can be challenging for employers to match each employee with a mentor with a similar background. And so, implementing group mentorship programs that allow a single mentor to guide a group of employees can be the ideal option.

Here are some simple ways to foster a positive, diverse, and inclusive workplace culture through employee mentorship programs.

Choose different approaches

A successful and effective mentorship program ensures employees from various working levels and backgrounds participate in it. While it must encourage employee engagement, it must also be able to build trust with the mentor and the organization. This can happen when the entire workforce, irrespective of the working levels or departments, participates in the program.

  • Top-Down Level – Senior leaders and top-level executives usually have more experience. Their guidance and mentorship can help employees choose the right path and plan their goals. When such highly knowledgeable and experienced leaders promote their program, it builds trust within the organization. Also, employees are convinced that employers are committed to improving the workplace culture and their health and wellbeing.
  • Mid-Level – In addition to the senior leaders and top management, the middlemen at the workplace, like recruitment managers, team leaders, and supervisors, can endorse and appreciate the mentorship programs. When a manager or supervisor who directly communicates with the employee group encourages them to participate in the program, it can be effective in boosting employee engagement.
  • Bottom-Up Level – The key idea of the employee mentorship programs is to encourage the workforce to open up to discussions and talk about their concerns and experiences. When employees talk about their mentorship venture and how it benefited them, it is highly likely to attract more participants and create awareness.

Focus on Diversity and Inclusion

Diverse and inclusive workplace culture can lay a strong foundation for robust employee engagement and overall workplace wellbeing. Over the years, many minority groups were neglected and marginalized across many industries, causing them undeserved anguish and agony. With time, such individuals have put their foot down and taken a stand for themselves. And so, organizations today cannot fall into the vicious cycle of discrimination.

A diverse and inclusive workplace must support and honor candidates of different gender, age group, ethnicity, demographics, culture, educational level, financial levels, races, and other such parameters. A group mentoring program that focuses on including employees from different backgrounds gives them a chance to collaborate and put across their ideas from different perspectives. While this means gaining knowledge for many, it also ensures employee opinions are heard.

Accommodate all employees

Another way of discrimination at the workplace is offering opportunities to grow and develop for potential high-skilled employees while leaving out the mediocre performance ones. However, the mentorship program will be effective in delivering its message only when the entire workforce engages. Try different approaches to raise curiosity and interest. Different styles of mentoring pointers and methods can help in building a better collaborative, engaging, and positive workplace culture.

This mentorship program can be expanded as training programs for new recruits. Such programs can be very helpful, especially for the Gen Z and millennial groups, who are keen on exploring their options for better professional futures.
